Your questions

Useful information before consulting a lawyer.

How should I prepare for a first meeting?

Gather the documents relevant to your case and organise them so they are easy to consult. An inventory may help if there are many documents. Also prepare a written chronology of events and the questions you would like to discuss.

Your lawyer will ask for the details needed to assess your situation. This first meeting is also an opportunity to discuss fees and the likely cost of the work or proceedings.

What do the Cantonal Bar Register and OAV–FSA designations mean?

Registration with the Cantonal Bar Register is subject to the legal requirements governing the profession. In the canton of Vaud, the official register is maintained by the Chambre des avocats, which also supervises the profession.

The Vaud Bar Association (OAV) is a professional association. Its active members are also affiliated with the Swiss Bar Association (FSA/SBA). These organisations provide information about the profession and its professional conduct rules.

How are fees determined?

Fees are charged on an hourly basis. The applicable rate depends on the engagement and should be discussed with your lawyer.

Discuss the hourly rate, expected expenses and estimated work at your first appointment. This will clarify the terms of the proposed engagement for your case.

Can I apply for legal aid?

If you cannot afford proceedings, you may be able to apply for legal aid. Eligibility depends on the conditions applicable to your situation. Also tell your lawyer if you have legal protection insurance.

For civil and administrative proceedings in Vaud, this assistance may cover legal advice and waive the requirement to advance court costs. Amounts advanced by the state are generally repayable. Official information explains the conditions and application procedure.
